Following the Fukushima thermonuclear accident, the French Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) asked EDF to develop and implement several measures to secure the 58 reactors in the French nuclear fleet. One of these measures is the installation of high-power diesel generator sets designed to compensate for any loss of the main power supply, ensuring that the reactors’ cooling systems remain powered at all times, including in the most extreme situations (natural disasters, earthquakes, flooding, etc.).

PHAREA is involved in this project at various levels, carrying out in particular the following work:

• Calculation-based validation of cooling and ventilation fans
• Engineering justification of building ventilation and air-conditioning systems
• Seismic calculations for construction cranes
